ONLY 7 WEEKS TILL RED RIBBON 2011
Middleboro Youth Advocates is encouraging our community to take part in Red Ribbon Week 2011. Red Ribbon Week is a National annual event in which red ribbons are worn as a reminder to children, families and communities to take a stand against drug use through the use of prevention education, and by pledging to live a drug-free life in order to ultimately create a healthier, safer and drug-free America.
Red Ribbon Week will be observed from October 23-29th. Community members are encouraged to participate in Red Ribbon Week by wearing Red Ribbons as well as displaying Red Ribbon posters in area business windows. Those who would like a red ribbon can pick one up at the Middleboro Public Library, The Old Colony YMCA or The Middleborough Town Hall. Anyone who would like to hang a poster can call or email the offices of Middleboro Youth Advocates, 508.947.8002 ext 208 or .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
The red ribbon and the observance of Red Ribbon Week began as a way to commemorate and honor Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Agent who was kidnapped and later killed by drug traffickers for his efforts on the war against drugs.
Its OK to Do The Right Thing- Prevention for Grades 6-8
As a community "It's OK to do the RIGHT THING" encourages middle school students to make the right choices and stay away from substance abuse and violence. It’s OK to do the right thing encourages students to be a part of the majority of Middleboro teens who are choosing to do something positive rather than drugs or alcohol.
Take a Stand-Be the Change- Prevention for Grades 9-12
Not every teen in Middleboro is involved in drinking, violence and drug use. In fact, over 1/2 of Middleboro Teens are choosing to do something positive rather than drugs or alcohol. This campaign encourages teens who are doing the right thing, and lets them know as a community, we are supportive of their decision.
Surviving the Teen Years- For Parents of youth grades 5-8
Underage drinking is a serious problem in Massachusetts, and parents can be a powerful influence in preventing youth from drinking. In fact, teens are far less likely to drink alcohol if they believe their parents would disapprove. They’re also far less likely to drink if they believe their parents would find out about it. Yet alcohol can be a tricky subject, and all too often, parents are unsure about how to talk about it with other parents.
M.Y.A. is implementing the "Surviving the Teen Years" program which is based on a model that was developed to provide parents with a comfortable opportunity to communicate openly with each other about underage drinking and how to prevent it. Each discussion is meant to be friendly and relaxed, held in a home or a similarly comfortable community setting (for example, a local coffee shop or a meeting room in the public library).
While designed primarily for parents of 5th- 8th graders, these discussions are appropriate for parents with younger children as well as older teenagers.
"Surviving the teen year's" discussion questions and supporting materials are relevant to all parents who will, at some point, encounter tough questions about alcohol and their kids.
