1. I talk to my child/teen about underage drinking and other substance abuse.
The #1 reason Middleboro Youth give for not drinking is that they don't want to disappoint their parents.

2. I don't accept alcohol and other substance abuse as a rite of passage to adulthood.
Do not provide youth with alcohol. Youth who drink before age 15 are 5 times more likely to develop alcohol problems as adults.

3. I set a good example for children and teens
Children and Teens learn from those around them. Adults who drink alcohol can model good choices by not going above the American Heart Association's limitations for alcohol use- one drink a day for women, and no more then two drinks a day for men.

4. I set clear rules about underage drinking and other substance abuse with my children.

5. I help my child/teen deal with stress and peer pressure.
Many teens who are abusing substances say they began using as a way to deal with their stress or anxiety. If you think your child is struggling, talk to their pediatrician for and get help. For more information (click here).

6. I listen to my child/teen.
When you value what your child or teen has to say, you have a greater chance of them valuing what you have to say.

7. I spend time with my child/teen.
Did you know that teens who eat dinner with the family six or seven times a week are at almost half the risk of substance abuse as teens who eat dinner with their family only twice a week? (National Survey of American Attitudes on Substance Abuse)

8. I know who my child/teen is friends with and where they are going
Frequently check in on your teen. Call to make sure a responsible adult will be supervising the gatherings you allow your teen to attend.

9. I keep my teen busy when I am not home.
Involve your teen in after school, supervised activities. Teens with unsupervised time are three times more likely to use marijuana and/or other drugs. Avoid having unlocked or unmonitored alcohol or prescription drugs at home.

10. I know where and when to ask for help.
If you suspect your teen might be using drugs or alcohol (click here) or talk to your child's doctor.
